Tuna Cans Can Be Surprisingly Useful—Easy DIY Ideas for Home

Most people toss empty tuna cans without a second thought. But before you throw them away next time, you may want to take a closer look. These small containers can be surprisingly useful around the house, and with a little creativity, they can turn into practical items you’ll actually enjoy using.

Tuna is popular because it’s convenient, affordable, and packed with nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids. That’s why so many households keep stacks of cans in the pantry. The problem is what happens afterward — the cans usually go straight into the trash, even though they still have plenty of value once cleaned properly.

One easy idea is to turn tuna cans into mini plant pots. After washing and drying them, you can decorate the outside with clothespins, twine, paint, or fabric. Small succulents or tiny cacti fit perfectly inside. Another cute option is a candle holder: place clothespins inside the can for decoration, then set a candle in a small glass holder to keep everything safe. They can also be useful in the kitchen.

Because of their shape, tuna cans work well as molds for single-portion desserts, puddings, or small baked treats — just make sure they’re thoroughly cleaned and the label is removed. If you like crafts, kids can decorate cans to make wind chimes or fun hanging rattles. With a little imagination, empty tuna cans can become home décor, kitchen tools, or simple DIY projects — proving that something small can still be valuable.
