Scientists Decode the Secret Behind a 117-Year-Old Woman’s Life — and Discover the Surprising Food Linked to Her Longevity

For centuries, humanity has searched for the secret to long life. The story of Maria Branyas Morera, who lived to 117, has offered scientists rare insight into how genetics and lifestyle may work together to support healthy aging.

Born in 1907 in San Francisco, Maria later moved to Catalonia, Spain, where she built a long, family-centered life. She lived through wars, political change, and more than a century of transformation.

Before her death in 2024, Maria asked researchers to study her DNA. Scientists at the University of Barcelona and the Josep Carreras Leukaemia Research Institute analyzed her genetic profile to understand her remarkable resilience.

Lead researcher Manel Esteller said her biology appeared to “separate being old from being sick.” Despite her age, many of her biomarkers resembled those of someone far younger.

Her daily habits also stood out. She avoided smoking and alcohol, stayed socially engaged, and maintained strong family ties — factors often linked to longevity.

One simple routine drew particular attention: her regular consumption of yogurt, including products from La Fageda. Rich in probiotics, yogurt may support gut health and reduce inflammation. She also began her mornings with a cereal-based smoothie.

Researchers found her telomeres — protective chromosome ends — showed unusual preservation for her age, possibly lowering risks of certain diseases.

Scientists believe her longevity reflected both inherited traits and consistent healthy choices. Her life suggests that while genetics matter, everyday habits may play an equally powerful role in extending not just lifespan, but healthspan.
