The Kitchen Habit Many People Overlook: Why Keeping a Towel on the Oven Door Matters

There is something comforting about a busy kitchen, but small habits can sometimes create unnecessary safety risks. One common habit is hanging a tea towel over the oven door handle because it is convenient and always nearby. However, towels should be kept away from hot appliances, burners, flames, grease, and hot cookware.

Heat is one of the biggest concerns. An oven or stovetop can become extremely hot during normal cooking, and a towel hanging against the appliance may gradually heat up. Loose fabric can also catch on clothing, cookware, or someone passing by. If that happens while carrying a hot pan, it could lead to a spill or dropped dish. As the article explains, “The easiest solution is also the simplest: keep towels away from active cooking surfaces and store them somewhere that is convenient but clearly separated from heat.”

A safer option is to give kitchen towels their own designated place. A sturdy hook on the side of a cabinet or another cool area can keep towels accessible without exposing them to heat. You can also keep a clean, folded towel on a safe nearby counter and replace it regularly. An apron with a pocket may also be useful, while loose towels and other unnecessary items should be kept away from cooking appliances.

For an easy family appetizer, slow cooker meatballs are another practical choice. Combine 32 ounces of frozen meatballs with 12 ounces each of grape jelly and chili sauce. Cook according to the meatball package and slow cooker instructions, making sure the meatballs are heated thoroughly before serving. Cranberry sauce or apricot preserves can be used instead of grape jelly for a different flavor.

Simple habits can make a kitchen safer and more organized. The next time you reach for a tea towel, pause before placing it over the oven handle and choose a safe spot away from heat instead.
