Snakes usually enter buildings because they are looking for food

Viral posts often claim that turmeric, sulfur, salt, mothballs, or other strong-smelling powders can keep snakes away from homes. But there is little reason to depend on these household substances. Extension guidance has found that several popular remedies, including sulfur, lime, mothballs, cayenne pepper spray, and similar products, do not reliably repel snakes. Sprinkling powder around a room or yard may seem simple, but it does not address why the snake came there.

Snakes usually enter buildings because they are looking for food, shelter, or a way to escape weather and predators. Rodents can be a major attraction because snakes may follow mice or rats into areas where food is available. They can also enter through foundation cracks, damaged screens, open basement windows, gaps around pipes and wires, doors, garages, and other small openings. Once inside, they may hide beneath furniture, appliances, boxes, cabinets, or stored materials. **“A powder on the floor does not fix these entry points.”**

Instead of relying on powders, focus on removing the conditions that attract snakes. Keep food, animal feed, and garbage securely stored, reduce rodent activity, clear away unnecessary clutter, and remove wood piles, debris, tall grass, and dense vegetation close to the house. Inspect the building regularly and seal openings around foundations, doors, screens, pipes, vents, and garages.

If a snake appears inside, keep children and pets away and maintain a safe distance. Do not grab, corner, trap, strike, or attempt to kill it. If removal is necessary, contact animal control or a qualified wildlife professional. Repeated sightings may indicate that the property still provides easy access, food, or shelter.

The most practical strategy is prevention rather than chasing individual snakes. **“That method takes more effort than sprinkling powder, but it targets the conditions that actually influence wildlife behavior.”** By sealing entry points, reducing clutter and vegetation, and controlling rodents, homeowners can make their property less inviting to snakes without relying on unproven household remedies.
