Apple issues warning to all 1.8bn iPhone users over ‘extremely sophisticated’ spyware attack

Apple Inc. has released an urgent iOS security update and is urging iPhone users worldwide to install it immediately. The update fixes 39 security vulnerabilities that could expose private data or allow attackers to interfere with devices.

According to the company, some flaws could let hackers crash apps, access sensitive information, or execute malicious code through harmful files, websites, or even physical access to a device. One vulnerability is considered especially serious.

The most concerning issue affects the system that controls how apps operate on the iPhone. Security experts describe it as a gatekeeper that keeps apps separated from critical system data.

If exploited, this flaw could allow attackers to bypass protections and run harmful code before safeguards respond. Apple confirmed the vulnerability may already have been used in highly targeted attacks, increasing the urgency of the update.

The patch also strengthens protections across Apple’s broader ecosystem, including iPads, Macs, Apple Watches, and the Safari browser. These improvements are designed to block spyware and prevent unauthorized access.

Experts warn that modern cyberattacks can remain hidden for long periods. While high-profile individuals are often targeted, everyday users are also at risk, making routine updates essential for everyone.

Users can install the update through the Settings app under Software Update. Enabling automatic updates ensures future security patches are applied promptly without manual action.

Warning signs of compromise may include unusual battery drain, overheating, or unfamiliar apps. For users who believe they may face elevated risk, Apple’s Lockdown Mode offers additional protection, though it limits certain device features.
