My 6-year-old son gave away every dollar he had to help our elderly neighbor keep her lights on.
The next morning, our front yard was covered with piggy banks… and police cars were parked outside our house.
My son, Ethan, has always had a huge heart.
When he cares about someone, he gives everything he has without hesitation.
So when he noticed that Mrs. Rose, the elderly woman who lived across the street, had spent several days sitting in a dark house with no lights on, he decided something had to be done.
He didn’t ask for permission.
He emptied his piggy bank.
Every coin.
Every dollar.
An entire year’s worth of savings.
Then he carried it across the street himself.
Mrs. Rose answered the door wearing a coat inside her own home.
When Ethan held out the money and told her it was for her electric bill, tears filled her eyes.
She tried to refuse.
He refused right back.
“You need it more than I do,” he told her.
Eventually, she accepted.
Before we left, she hugged him tightly and whispered something in his ear.
Whatever she said, he kept it to himself.
I thought the story ended there.
It didn’t.
The next morning, I opened my front door and froze.
Piggy banks.
Dozens of them.
Some large, some tiny.
Some painted bright colors, others plain and old-fashioned.
They covered the porch, the walkway, and even part of the lawn.
Then I noticed the police vehicles parked at the curb.
An officer was already approaching.
“Ma’am,” he said, “we need you to open one of those piggy banks.”
Confused, I picked one up.
It felt heavier than I expected.
I dropped it onto the concrete.
The ceramic shattered.
And what spilled out wasn’t money.
The sight of it left me speechless.
Even the officers exchanged stunned looks.
Because hidden inside was something nobody expected to find.
