Our family asks for privacy during this time as we grieve his loss and celebrate the life of a man who lived with intensity, imagination, and heart. Thank you to everyone who has shown love and support.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following the success of his tenure on&nbsp;<em>Buffy the Vampire Slayer&nbsp;<\/em>(Brendon was a mainstay in all seven seasons of the show) the actor continued to take film and television roles until as recently as 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-main.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2026\/03\/24093518\/GettyImages-900908.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-189487\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">From l-r: David Boreanaz as Angel, Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy and Nicholas Brendon as Xander Harris in \u201cBuffy The Vampire Slayer.\u201d Season 2.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet away from the cameras, he endured public struggles with substance abuse and mental illness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The actor was arrested multiple times, facing charges including felony vandalism, resisting or obstructing officers, criminal mischief and felony corporal injury to a spouse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brendon revealed in 2023 that he had suffered a heart attack and had been diagnosed with a congenital heart defect. As per the&nbsp;Hollywood Reporter, he also had cauda equina syndrome \u2013 a medical emergency caused by compression of nerve roots at the base of the spinal cord \u2013 and had been forced to undergo a number of spinal surgeries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sarah Michelle Gellar, who played the titular \u2018Buffy\u2019 in&nbsp;<em>Buffy the Vampire Slayer,&nbsp;<\/em>wrote a heartfelt tribute to her former costar on social media following news of the his passing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-main.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2026\/03\/24093528\/GettyImages-156079156-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-189488\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Nicholas Brendon during UPN TCA Summer Press Tour 2001 at Ritz-Carlton Huntington Hotel in Pasadena, California, United States. To live so near to the spotlight, and never step in it. But I know. I see more than anybody realises, because nobody\u2019s watching me\u2019,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gellar added: \u201cI saw you Nicky.
