These may help to protect against some of the damage to brain cells associated with Alzheimer\u2019s disease. Research has suggested that this may be beneficial to help maintain memory and thinking skills.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They continued to explain that a recent study suggests that sticking to a Mediterranean diet could reduce dementia risk by up to 23 per cent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Apart from following a diet rich in oily fish, wholegrains and fruit and vegetables, some other foods should be avoided, according to experts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Fizzy drinks<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>Neurologist Dr Shaheen Lakhan told HuffPost that because of the high sugar content in fizzy drinks, soda can be among the worst foods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSoda is one of the worst foods for brain health due to the high concentration of simple sugars, which damage the blood vessels supplying the brain,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOver time, this starves the brain from the very fuels it needs to function, leading to premature dementia and strokes. Acutely, sugar also causes brain inflammation, irritability, poor mood and sleep disturbances.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Margarine<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>A lot of people assume that real butter is the worst option for your health, and though butter is high in fats, margarine contains trans fats, which raise \u2018bad\u2019 cholesterol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe often hear that trans fats aren\u2019t good for your heart and blood vessels. The same applies to the vessels of the brain,\u201d said Dr Shae Datta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA study from the journal Neurology found that older adults who had the highest levels of elaidic acid (a common type of trans fat) in their blood were more likely to develop dementia.
