To me, he was the man who had fixed my car, helped my mother after my father died, and had known our family for years. I trusted him completely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When my work schedule changed, Travis offered to pick Emma up. We completed all the school paperwork, and Emma loved their walks home. My husband, Ryan, never did. He insisted he didn\u2019t trust Travis, but he couldn\u2019t give me a real reason. For three weeks, everything worked perfectly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then her teacher called me at work. \u201cCome to school right now. It\u2019s about the man who picks her up.\u201d At the principal\u2019s office, I found Emma, Travis, and Ryan\u2019s sister, Melissa. That evening, I confronted Ryan. He admitted he had been questioning Emma because he was suspicious of Travis. But Travis had warned him to stop putting Emma in the middle. Ryan had secretly changed the pickup arrangement instead of discussing it with me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, Ryan confessed the real reason. \u201cEvery time I can\u2019t be there, somehow he is,\u201d he said. Emma constantly talked about what Travis taught her, and Ryan felt like he was missing his daughter\u2019s life. Then he admitted the thought he had been afraid to say aloud: \u201cSometimes I think you\u2019ve been in love with him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I realized Ryan wasn\u2019t protecting Emma\u2014he was jealous and insecure. Travis calmly told him that Emma actually talked about Ryan constantly too. When Ryan apologized to Emma, she didn\u2019t immediately hug him. He had to accept that trust couldn\u2019t be demanded back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ryan later apologized to the school, Melissa, and Travis. We rearranged our schedules so he could spend more time with Emma. Eventually, Travis returned to the pickup list. There had never been a competition except the one Ryan had created in his own head. Trust between Ryan and me is still healing, but now he listens to Emma instead of questioning her until he hears what he wants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
