I had spent months preparing my six-year-old daughter, Emma, for her first airplane ride. Because she has autism, familiar routines help her manage unfamiliar situations. I had packed her favorite snacks, headphones, coloring books, stuffed airplane, and, most importantly, reserved the window seat she had been excited about for months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The trip was meant to be simple: four days at the beach, just the two of us. It had been two years since Emma\u2019s father, Sean, passed away, and I wanted to give her a happy memory. When we boarded, however, I discovered a woman already sitting in Emma\u2019s seat, 7A.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I politely explained that the seat belonged to my daughter. The woman insisted she had paid for the window seat. When we landed, the captain gave Emma a pair of pilot wings. As we walked toward the exit, she held my hand and Buzz in the other.
