I\u2019m the only person responsible for my seventy-nine-year-old mother, Joyce. After she suffered a serious fall, I made the painful decision to move her into a nursing home so she would be protected while I was at work. I never stopped being there for her. Every weekend I visited with homemade treats, painted her nails, and decorated her room with family photos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One Saturday I arrived carrying banana bread and a warm cardigan, expecting our usual afternoon together. Instead, the receptionist looked confused and said, \u201cJoyce? She was discharged several days ago.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
